THIS PUBLICATION MAPS JAPAN’S VISUAL LANGUAGE OF DIRECTION, ORDER, AND HARMONY, AN A–Z OF HOW SIGNAGE BECOMES BOTH DESIGN SYSTEM AND CULTURAL MIRROR.

Drawn from fieldwork across Kyoto, Tokyo, and Yubiso, each “station” explores a different facet of Japanese wayfinding through photography, typography, and editorial design.

Inspired by transit diagrams, the book operates like a network of ideas, connecting ancient craft with modern precision.

Printed on tactile stock with a muted palette, it celebrates clarity, restraint, and quiet intent.

Rooted in Kenya Hara’s belief that “to design is to empty, not to fill,” the work invites reflection on how wayfinding does more than direct movement, it reveals identity, philosophy, and place.
